Visual Techniques

magazine spread
Regularity, Unity, fragmentation, predictability, neutrality, Depth, flatness, diffusion, subtlety

Instability, asymmetry, fragmentation, variation, singularity, sharpness, randomness, subtlety, boldness
Both of these page spreads express what their intentions are and what audience they are trying to attract. There is more fragmentation in the second page spread because of the broken elements of the imagery and placing of texts. Other than that they are opposite displays of design. The first image is more in depth because of the use of different colors that differentiate from the background. The use of the red text makes them stand out and gives it a visual hierarchy for the viewer to highlight certain areas of the spread. The second page spread presents the depth using the imagery. It presents photos of the different attractions and foods that are provided by the hotel making this informational spread very appealing to the readers. The first page spread gives the readers an idea that the concept is graffiti with the strong imagery on the top corner giving this page spread a subtle look to it. The second spread has a subtle look too using the soft colors of the large fonts and the little text surrounding the images which are the ones that make the visual stand out.

CONTRAST

This is an example of good contrast. The placing of the person creates a visual hierarchy for the magazine that has to do with fitness for men being the idea of the magazine. Even though it looks cluttered and overly exaggerated, the box of texts balances it out. The different variations of the text and David Beckham gives the magazine a unified look.

This is a poor design of a magazine cover of the NOW celebrity magazine. Unlike the Men's fitness magazine, the clutter of text is extreme. It draws the viewers eyes all over the magazine. The choice of colors are not appealing to the eye. The use of imagery with the pictures of the celebrity makes the viewers focus on too many headings that gives mixed direction of what the magazine is suppose to be focused on.

Success and Failure: Movie Posters

This is a great example of success in poster design. The iron man title is nicely centered and with tony stark in the middle, he creates a balance because he is the vertical axis of the poster, Iron Man title being the horizontal axis of the design, and the iron man suits being displayed from left to right balances out the image.

I chose this as a failure in design because I feel it was too simplistic.
To put the head of a person on a silhouette explains very little on who
the person is suppose to be. Its in a stressful state because of the placement
of the head. The silhouette doesn't do much for the poster. That could be
superman with a bad haircut. The head is a eyesore. All that it tells me
is that he must be one of the x-men. It makes the picture imbalance with
head taking up most of the right side of the poster.

Movement

Movement, Option 1

This here is a magazine cover with one of the greatest former NBA players Michael Jordan. This design shows an example of simulated motion. The design of Michael Jordan moving through simulated motion in three different perceptions of him attempting to make a slam dunk. The designer used real time motion of a basketball players movement of running and jumping. The placement of the ball and his movement creates an optical flow that a basketball player normally makes even though this cover simulates him flying.

This jumping pose is another example of movement. It displays a freeze frame of movement in the logo. This not only says movement but the image also interprets movement with the dance move. The movement of the body is seen in this silhouette of a female dancer. This is an example of info design.

Tone and Color

How Tone is Operating

There is a lot of tone in the image. Focus on the blue that defines the genie and the highlights that displays the genies features from the nose, to the hand, and then the fingers. It starts off at dark blue to a light blue.

How the tone interacts

This poster is full of movement. The poster has a strong hierarchy of tonal design. It shows the image of the lamp and moves it sway to the main characters Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, and the rest of the characters that make up the movie. It goes from a yellow orange tone to a dark blue cool colors. Just as if you are looking towards the sky during the day, to the ozone layer and the night sky.

How Color is operating

There are a strong use of soft colors with the horizon with the use of red and yellow it creates a warm feel to the poster especially since the setting of the movie is in the sandy desert where it is always warm.

How color is interacting
Color is interacting with dimensions. There is so much detail and color towards all the characters. It starts small with the characters and slowly gets bigger to reveal more characters and then you end up with a colorful piece that highlights all the characters from the color of their skin tones, to the color of their clothes.

Urban Street Wear

LINES
The T-shirt that the model is wearing represents lines that are not only visible from the collar to the bottom but also through the buttons and the creativity of the font. according to dondis " A line could also be defined as a dot in motion." The motion of buttoning up the shirt to buttoning down is the continuous mark of the line. The design of the font has a fluid linear quality contributing to the freedom of experimentation. The way they extend the letter "C" creates a motion of the snake that is created at the end of the letter.

SHAPE
The huff socks created a silhouette of the marijuana leaf. A silhouette is associated to the concept of shapes. The silhouette has the lines of the leafs drawn which articulates the complexity of the shape. The shape of the leaf is associated with the rectangles combined with triangles acting as the blade.

DOTS
The dots emphasize the roundness of the cap. According to Dondis, "dots connect and therefore are capable of leading the eye." This altamont hat is covered with dots and it gives the illusion that it is a 5 panel hat. Each side of the hat creates a different tone of design based on the different sizes of the dot and the spacing between each of them.

Visual Thinking

For this puzzle, the idea is to find all the letter E's within the image. It was simplistic to count the number of rows of E's across and bottom. I had to keep in mind that I can rotate the letter as well as change the size so I was able to find the letter in the middle of the image as well. I was off by 2 because I did not inverse the image and that is what presented the image.

My roommate wasiu got a much lower count because he did not see the multiple E's by inversing the image. and he didn't rotate the image as well to see the letters E's that were upside down. from bottom to top.

For this puzzle the motive is to count the total amount of triangles. Count all the ones of all possible sizes. The total number of triangles concealed in the image that i found was 41. I was able to see three continuous patterns coming from the center, to the edges and from left to right.

Wasiu's method of counting the triangles was from seeing the continuous patter and counting the ones that differentiated due to size and rotation. He counted a total of 40 .

Top-Down Visual Processing

To look further more into the concept of top down visual processing I chose this photo of the AVENGERS. The avengers is an elite team of super heroes known from the marvel comic books. In the image you see the avengers as a whole, fighting against evil forces. Each image of the heroes within the image shows features of who each avenger is. Top left you see a big green man that everyone will know is the hulk. If you look at the bottom right you will see the Almighty Thor. If your familiar with the comic book, his weapon of choice is the Hammer. So basically your mind is familiarizing what is being scene by seeing the big picture then annotates the image of what is within the image.

Meaning 2

http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/kaepernicking-49ers-t-shirt/pid-747967/pgid-780439
The image on the T-Shirt identifies representation of a football player. The impact the t-shirt has for the user is that it represents America's game. Football is the sport that everyone knows about. This shirt represents a team that everyone is familiar with. It relates to the other two levels by the choice of color to represent the body parts and how they are displayed. And its an abstract drawing of one of the players.
The choice of color and shape creates an abstract image of a football player. The impact it has on the user is the pride of  football fans representing their favorite football team, the San Francisco 49ers. And their favorite quarterback Colin Kaepernick. It relates to the other two levels by the football stance of colin kaepernick making a touchdown. And the Symbol of the helmet and and the symbol of the 49ers shows what type of sport is being displayed on the t-shirt.
The design symbolizes San Francisco 49ers football player Colin Kaepernick. The impact it has on the user is excitement of making plays and scoring touchdowns due to the pose that the abstract figure of 49ers quarter back Colin Kaepernick is showing when he scores a touchdown. The Nike Symbol has the viewers be aware that it is Nike and their creative team that created this designs for the 49er fans.

Representation, Symbolism, Abstraction

Representation

This image displays that this is a  fruit bat. The wing span allows the views to recognize that this is a flying animal that lives i the wild. The background in the image classifies that this is a night shot which means that the fruit bat is a nocturnal animal. The fact that the bat is eating a bright red fruit and not blood tells the viewers that this is a fruit bat. It wouldn't be a bird because the animal does not have feathers or any features of a bird. They have been known to be rats with wings.

Symbolism

It is a simple design with imagery of an arrow duplicated three times and rotated in 3 different ways to give the viewers the motion of coming full circle. The color green is used to symbolize the go green movement. The image is a international symbol to recycle. To use waste or trash to recreate another product out of them. It is  a simplistic design because of how from top to bottom the design is being created from the image of the arrow to the placement in the center of the page and the use of colors being a last minute detail of letting the view know that the image is being directed to being eco friendly recycling.

Abstract

This is an abstract design of an earring. This does not replicate the average hoop, or diamond stud that you would normally see when people wear earrings. The feature of the unique design makes the product an earring. It creates the image of a snake wrapping around the ear through the earlobe which makes the user or viewers realize that it is an accessory to be worn. The form of the earring and the material that the snake earring is made of makes the design attractive and is functional and creates the imagery of an earring.
